8 Tips for Successful Mondays

Mondays are like hide-and-seek. “Ready or not, here I come!” It’s inevitable. Most people dread Mondays and they shout it from the rooftops. Those people are wrong. I’m here to tell you that if you aren’t jumping out of bed on Monday, you need to start. Here are 8 great tips for having successful and happier Mondays.


Failure to prepare means you are preparing to fail. Mondays are only overwhelming if you didn’t take Sunday to get everything in order. Write your Monday to-do list on Sunday–or better yet, on Friday night. On Fridays, everything you need to accomplish next week is on the top of your mind, so it makes sense to capture it then. If you start your week without this list, you’ll have to write it on Monday when you are feeling sluggish from your weekend.


Wearing your favorite outfit makes you feel better about yourself– and science backs that up. You can use clothing to improve negative emotions. To have a positive mindset, choose bright colors, your favorite fabrics, and a brand you feel great about. The best idea is to pick out your outfit the night before so your Monday starts beautifully.


Feeling great on Monday mornings can be as simple as getting some natural light. Try opening the curtains, watering your outdoor plants, taking a walk, or drinking your coffee outside. Light, similar to a cup of coffee, has an alerting effect. Also, being out in nature, even for a few minutes, can boost your happiness. Some other great ways to brighten up your Mondays are to paint your walls a lighter color, change the lightbulbs in your home to more natural light, or move your desk closer to a window.


Our brains love routine. Routines are a great way of conserving your energy for more complicated parts of your day. A great morning routine is as easy as finding an activity or habit (hopefully a healthy one) that puts you in a good mood and that you look forward to. This can be as simple as buying a new face wash, drinking a really good cup of tea, or sneaking in a quick exercise.


“Living for the weekend” is not a long-term strategy. You can’t go through life thinking that 5 out of 7 days are undesirable. The way you treat Mondays is a clear indicator of whether or not you enjoy what you do every week. If you don’t, figure out ways to make it more enjoyable. Find something you love to do and schedule it in for Monday. Do you have a book you’re trying to catch up on? Do you like bubble baths? Maybe you want to try out that new banana bread recipe or workout that you’ve had your eye on. Monday is the perfect day to do these things!


Staying up late on the weekends is a bad habit– it can lead to feeling even more tired on Monday. Research shows that sleeping in on the weekends may not reverse the effects of chronic sleep deprivation and that an irregular sleep schedule can make it harder to fall and stay asleep. The best way to schedule your weekend sleep is to follow the one hour rule– try not to go to bed or wake up more than an hour past your usual weekday schedule.


Random acts of kindness are cool. Also, they’re surprisingly easy to do. When you put positive energy into the world, you will get it back. As you start your day, look for ways to perform a random act of kindness– buy the next person in line a coffee, or give your coworker a compliment. It will make them feel good, and it will make you feel good. Now that’s a win-win situation.


At the end of the day, the way you feel about Mondays has nothing to do with the day, but everything to do with you. Mondays only suck because you convince yourself that they do. Change your way of thinking and your Mondays will become brighter and happier days. You get to decide if your day will control you or if you will control your day.
